In the past, apprenticeships were once just for 16–24-year-olds so when you think of apprentices you are probably imagining young adults who are fresh out of school. Fortunately, the age restrictions were scrapped a few years ago and in the year 2019/2022 over 45% of apprenticeship starts were by people over the age of 24. In fact, over the last couple of years, a lower proportion of starters were under the age of 19 and a higher proportion were over the age of 19 (House of Commons). This just shows the popularity of adult apprenticeships and how these programmes are for people of all backgrounds and experience levels. Here are four reasons why you’re never too old to be an apprentice.
1. As an apprentice, it’s about attitude, not age
As mentioned, apprenticeships are not just for the younger generation. They create an equal opportunity for everyone, offering the chance to learn new skills in a new or existing industry. Whether you’re looking to further your knowledge in your existing field or switch industries, all you need is a can-do attitude and a willingness to get involved.
2. You’re never too old to learn new skills
If you’ve been out of education or in a job for quite some time, it might seem daunting going back into a learning environment. Apprenticeships offer a great opportunity to expand on or learn new skills which can ultimately help you in the next stage of your career. Not everyone finds classroom learning easy, which is why apprenticeship programmes might be the perfect choice for you, giving you the control of how and when you learn.
3. Your age is an asset as an apprentice
Nowadays, apprenticeship cohorts are made up of people from all different background and age groups so there’s no need to feel out of place! Your age is an asset as it provides transferrable skills that employers always look for when recruiting for a new team member. It also can bring a unique outlook to your cohort and fellow apprentices, especially when taking on group tasks. Having time management skills will become a huge strength when it comes to balancing work with coursework.
4. Push yourself out of your comfort zone
It’s always important to take on a new challenge and push yourself out of your comfort zone, no matter what age you are.
