Responsibilities and duties of the role

As an apprentice in healthcare, you’ll be responsible for a wide variety of tasks, such as:

–        Preparation of the environment for medical procedures

–        Working closely with a multi-professional team

–        Keeping track of records

–        Production of reliable data

–        Treating patients with dignity, kindness and compassion while also giving them informed consent about their care.

As the nature of this role is patient-focused, there will be a strong emphasis on learning how to treat patients with compassion. We would like all patients to feel heard and listened to, and to be able to contribute information regarding their care. This means that you will need to communicate in a clear, concise way when conducting medical procedures and be able to answer any questions that the patient has or refer the question to your supervisor at the time so that they can deal with the enquiry accurately.

Another part of this apprenticeship is developing your knowledge about healthcare science. This is incredibly important as new research about conditions has been released over the last 10 years, so making sure that you are informing patients about the most up to date information is crucial.

Audits and Service Improvements

We will also be looking for ways to improve our services and we value your feedback and contribution to this section of the apprenticeship. Specifically, we would like to know how we can deliver the highest quality services and outcomes to our patients and healthcare staff.

Leadership skills

You will also be learning leadership skills on the job; this will include effective communication, conflict management and decision-making, as it is important for you to be aware of your strengths and weaknesses, and how that will affect your role in the team.

Job Prospects

Once you have completed your Level 2 Healthcare Science apprenticeship, there are a range of jobs that are available in this sector such as Life science, Biomedical science and clinical biochemistry.
