Promoting Apprenticeships in the UK

Why Apprenticeships?

Why Apprenticeships?

Hey YOU!….. Yes YOU!! listen in, apprenticeships are one of many excellent ways to gain access to a company or a sector you want to work in and develop your skill set, and if you do a really good job… You may even become a member of the team! But why choose an apprenticeship?

With 35% of apprentices aged between 18-24 followed closely by 20% at age 18. Apprenticeships are usually aimed for post GCSE and sixth form graduates. However, 19% of apprentices are aged 25-34 (I’m part of that age group) So what are the pros and cons and why would you decide to choose one over say a degree or gap year…. Lest discus it!

Pro’s

  • Learn while you earn!
  • Get real industry experience!
  • Gain an insight on whether the career is for you!
  • Gain a qualification at the end!

Con’s

  • Can be competitive
  • May not lead to a degree (unless it’s a Level 5 apprenticeship)
  • May not get that Uni lifestyle experience
  • You might not enjoy the experience (a reality, even though it’s unlikely)

Weighing up all of the above…. My personal opinion; being a Google digital Marketing apprentice myself. The lifestyle, exposure, qualification, wage and networking opportunities (just to name a few) far outweigh the benefits of an other opportunity out there. Don’t get me wrong, degree’s are really important and a great way to boost your annual salary (a median of £24,000 per year in the U.K without one according to CNBC). But are they really necessary anymore?

Many major tech companies such as Google, Tesla and Facebook have now opened their doors for those who haven’t acquired one and in some cases matching the wages of those who do…

So let me ask you this questions. Why apprenticeships?……

Maybe we should be asking why not?
