Jake’s Story – A day in the life of a Digital Marketing apprentice.
Wondering what it’s like to embark on an apprenticeship? If you’re an employer, or thinking of embarking on an apprenticeship yourself, read on to learn about Jake. Jake is a Digital Marketing apprentice who works for a small chain of cake shops, managing their ecommerce and social media presence. He talks to us about his experience.
Jake, tell us about your job and why you are on the digital marking apprenticeship.
“I currently work for Ellie’s Bakery and have been a Digital Marketing apprentice for 6 months. I work for a chain of 3 cake shops that sell fresh bakes goods, and make bespoke cakes for special occasions. We also sell cake decorating goods and run classes. Ellie, the owner, wanted to promote her shops, classes and products online. I joined the business as a Ecommerce and Social Media Assistant. Chief taster too, even though that’s not in my job title!”
“I joined the digital marketing apprenticeship for both personal and business growth. Ellie makes absolutely amazing cakes but isn’t the best at getting the most from social media. I enjoy the digital work but am just starting my career. The apprenticeship has helped me gain knowledge of the social space.”
What does a typical learning and working day look like for you?
“On a day when I have learning, I pop my out of office on so I have no distractions. In the morning I will have a learning session on a subject such as social media best practices. This will involve learning, discussion with other apprentices and practical activities.”
“Then in the afternoon, it’s time to put the learning into practice. I recently created an event on Facebook for an open evening being hosted at the bakery. Through learning on my course I was able to post to the most relevant platform and the correct time of day. I also used my knowledge to promote the event using Facebook paid posts and also posting to Instagram using hashtags to gain interest.”
What has been your biggest success so far?
“My biggest success has been Instagram, before I joined the bakery our account only had 200 followers and Ellie didn’t post very often let alone use hashtags! The account now has over 5k followers, we have a social media plan so post regularly. As the cakes are so visually beautiful, Instagram is the best platform for us. We also use Facebook but more for class information and events.”
“Ellie has also seen an increase in sales, especially drop in sales at the shops. This is down to posting at the right time on Instagram (and Facebook) showing the produce available and where to buy. We also have lots of people tagging us in their posts when enjoying our cakes! #elliesbakery”
Would you recommend an apprenticeship to others?
“Yes! Definitely recommend! Not only am I learning lots of useful marketing practices for my job, the course has also given me confidence. I can talk to my boss better about social media and my plans for the future. Because I am confident I worry less about my job and doing the right thing. Another benefit has been meeting other apprentices, some work for small businesses like me, others work for companies with 100’s of staff. We are able to come together and share our experiences and learn from each other.”
