Become a Healthcare science practitioner (HSCP) with an integrated degree in this bespoke apprenticeship course.

The duration of this course is a minimum of 36 months. Apprentices will achieve an accredited/approved BSc (Honours) degree in Healthcare Science (Level 6).

What does a Healthcare Science Practitioner do?

Health Care Science Practitioners (HCSPs) work independently as well as as part of a team, providing Health Care Science (HCS) and technical services related to their specific area/department.

To practice within the scope of their HCS specialization, HCSPs must possess knowledge, skills, competences, attitudes, values, and behaviors. As well as leading and supporting teams involved in these practices, HSCPs must take responsibility for their own practice.

Entry criteria

The entry criteria for the HSCP apprenticeship with an integrated degree is specific to individual employers. However, you must obtain a level 2 English and Maths qualification if you don’t already have these.

Key skills you’ll obtain from this apprenticeship

  • Person-centered Care and Professional Practice e.g. develop effective partnerships with patients, treating patients/carers/families with kindness and compassion
  • Personal and Professional Development (PPD) e.g. critically reflect on your technical/non-technical practice, keeping knowledge and skills updated & responding to appraisal/feedback
  • Health, Safety and Security e.g. manage delegated junior staff training in security/health/safety practices that underpin their work, especially in infection control
  • Quality e.g. strategically plan clinical and quality management processes
  • Technical scientific services e.g. Independently analyze/interpret accurately clinical technical data and be responsible for the safety and functioning of equipment
  • Clinical Care e.g. ensure that responsibilities for safeguarding and protecting patient confidentiality, including record keeping, are met
  • Audit/Service Improvement e.g. manage audit and/or service improvement programs
  • Research and Innovation e.g. use research, reasoning and problem-solving skills to support quality care improvements/innovation in your area of work
  • Leadership e.g. coordinate leadership activities across an HCS technical team

End Point Assessment

Apprentices will be eligible to attempt the End Point Assessment (EPA) upon completion of:

  • Level 2 functional skills in English and Mathematics
  • A record or portfolio of evidence that documents the assessments and tasks completed
  • Achievement of the BSc (Hons) degree

The EPA itself consists of three components that are taken on the same day as part of the same assessment event, with the same Independent Assessor.

  • A 1 hour written Readiness for Practice Test (RPT) which is set by the university or the Assessment Organisation
  • A face-to-face Professional Discussion (PD) between the apprentice and a trained Independent Assessor. The Professional Discussion is based on the apprentice’s portfolio and should take approximately 40 minutes
  • A research presentation up to 15 minutes in length, followed by a discussion and review of the presentation content with the Independent Assessor
