I was 17 when I got my apprenticeship offer, to start working at the world’s largest tech company as a digital marketing apprentice. I had no previous career experience but was elated at the opportunity I had. However, to say I was anxious to begin my professional career was a complete understatement. No matter what age and how much experience you have navigating a new job can be difficult. Apprenticeship programmes come with a unique set of challenges you will have to face. So, we will explore some of them today!
Studying Alongside Your Job
An apprenticeship is a popular alternative to university. With the earn and learn advantage and getting career experience as well as studying. Depending on your chosen apprenticeship course, you will have to do some level of studying to gain your qualification. This can get particularly challenging, as a result of balancing full time work, studying, social and family commitments. Therefore, it is important as an apprentice to prioritise and manage time effectively. For me, this was a big leaning curve and I didn’t get it right the first time or the second! For instance, I didn’t raise my voice if I was struggling which resulted in push backs in the projects. The main thing I learnt was to communicate with my manager if things were getting overwhelming.
Building a Network
A big word you will hear a lot in your time as an apprentice is ‘networking’. Which is, communicating with others to build a network of professional contacts. Firstly, networking is critical in any job, as an apprentice this was a new experience for me. Nevertheless, it can be challenging to speak to lots of professionals. I recommend pushing yourself to join social events, connecting over LinkedIn, joining organisations. One of the most important things I learnt is, many people are interested in what apprentices do. So share your story and grow your network!
Learning New Skills
You will learn lots of new skills as an apprentice, to carry in your career for the rest of your life. Learning any new skill can be a challenge. Sometimes keeping up with the pace of learning can be overwhelming. Above all, make sure to ask questions. Those around you understand you are just starting out. However, they may not know you are struggling unless you speak out! To sum up, seek guidance, be willing to learn from your mistakes and practice skills regularly.
In conclusion, whilst there are challenges you will overcome in an apprenticeship, it is an incredibly rewarding experience. You will learn valuable skills to carry you throughout your professional (and personal) career. You will have to put in the effort and grow from mistakes and issues you may face. But you will end up making lifelong memories and friends along the way. It will be an experience you will never forget!
