If you are in the middle of applying to university but unsure on what you want to study, or whether you want to go, this blog post is for you. I am an Apprentice Network Alumni and a University graduate. I am writing this blog to offer my advice to any sixth form/college students who are thinking about apprenticeships and or if university is for them.
I felt a massive pressure from teachers when writing my UCAS personal statement to apply to university. Even then I was unsure on what course I wanted to dedicate 3 years of my life to and a massive debt on top of that too. I was lucky enough to hear about possible apprenticeship opportunities I can apply to. (Before I carry on please remember this is my own personal opinion based on my experiences). I was lucky enough to hear about Apprenticeship Network who offer vast amounts of apprenticeship roles. Apprenticeship roles are just as competitive as anywhere else. However, the exposure to these opportunities is not that great. That is why I am writing this blogpost to reach out to potential candidates who were in the same place I was in college. To offer my advice and to let you know what worked well for me, hoping it works well for you too.
So, what is my experience? I decided to opt for a digital marketing apprenticeship when leaving college. This is because of the disadvantages apprenticeships offer you which is a limited career pathway, but I felt digital marketing was slightly a broad subject I could explore. I enjoyed an 18 month apprenticeship where I took on a lot of responsibilities and learnt valuable experiences in my area. However, I did feel as if I missed out on the university experience. After I completed my apprenticeship I decided to apply to university. Which was much less stressful process than when in college. You have a lot more skills and knowledge you can add to your personal statement. And you feel more mature to head off to university and live on your own after.
