Occupation Summary

The purpose of this occupation is to ensure materials are fit for purpose in a number of industries, including Petrochemical, Pharmaceutical, Engineering, Construction, and Manufacturing industries across numerous sectors including automotive, aerospace, healthcare, defence, and energy, mechanical, civil and chemical engineering, material failure, rheology, adhesives, polymers, traditional and advanced ceramics.


In terms of being fit for purpose the products need to adhere to the following standards: product innovation, performance, failure diagnosis, operational management, process and manufacturing, and the positive advancement of materials science, thus enhancing economic and social value today and in the future.

What might a typical work day look like for you?

An average day for a materials technologist will involve tasks such as materials testing, this involves testing materials used by clients through activities such as investigations, gathering physical evidence, critical analyses, drawing conclusions and recommending a course of action.
Other tasks could include: novel product development, solving manufacturing issues, laboratory management, team leadership, technological sales, and client management. This is all dependent on which business your company falls under within the industry.

You may also end up designing new materials or production processes, combining materials, or additive manufacturing. You would be providing technical leadership if you design and develop new material products, meaning you would be choosing the correct materials and applications through the use of data derived from analysis within a lab or the field.
some examples of this are as follows:

• materials for engine parts for aerospace
• commercial vehicles
• healthcare applications such as dental work
• Body amour for defence
• materials for new developments in battery design and manufacture
• coatings and additives for or materials for replacement bones or prosthetics
• high-performance cars

You may work to develop new materials with colleagues working in a laboratory.

Who will I work with?

The employee will be in both internal and external project teams in which they will demonstrate management and leadership skills, whilst reporting directly to their personnel between both their internal and external teams. Whilst doing this the employee will also be liaising with clients in a sales role and provide technical consultancy, proof of concept, or scale-up initiatives.
Work may take place on projects in the lab, in the office, onsite, or in the field if local, regional, national or global contexts.
In addition to all this, employees may be expected to develop new business relations and manage existing clients, SMEs, larger national companies, government agencies, and multinational organisations.
