Get An Apprenticeship Or Go To Uni?

Get An Apprenticeship Or Go To Uni?

What’s an apprenticeship?

According to the government an apprenticeship is a fantastic way for young adults to get paid whilst working and learning. 80% of your time will be spent doing your job and 20% of the time will be spent on working towards your qualification. You’ll also be able to get holiday pay too!

Apprenticeships take a minimum of 1 year and as long as 5 years to complete.

The requirements are that you need live in England, you’re not in full time education and that you’re over 16 years old!

Someone who got an apprenticeship.

There are 4 types of apprenticeships currently available:

Intermediate apprenticeship for those who want to achieve a GCSE Level qualification.

Advanced apprenticeships is a qualification that’s equivalent to an A-level.

Higher apprenticeship which can be equivalent to a higher national certificate, higher national diploma or undergraduate degree.

And the last level is a degree apprenticeship which can be a undergraduate degree and masters degree equivalent.

Going to Uni Instead Of Taking An Apprenticeship

University offers choices that suits a good range of careers and it’s especially great for those who want to enter a job that requires a degree like:

  • Engineering jobs such as being nuclear engineer
  • Medical jobs such as being a registered nurse, medical services manager or a physical therapist
  • Jobs in investment banking

However if you take a University degree over an apprenticeship you’ll ultimately have to pay for the course with student debt or not. However with apprenticeships you don’t have to pay for your training.

How Can You Apply For An Apprenticeship?

When you’ve decided if an apprenticeship is better than going to uni, you need to find a location. Apprenticeships are available across Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales and the best place to find them is the government’s Find An Apprenticeship website.

Bonus: John’s An Apprentice’s Review

Hi I’m John, I’ve been an apprentice who’s worked for a top company without any A-levels and the best thing is I’m being paid to work and learn!

I believe apprenticeships provide young people the best chance to start their life especially for people like me who has a passion for business Looking back I’m so happy that I didn’t end up with any debt to start my life unlike my friends. I’m perfectly satisfied.

Yet it can be difficult at times because I can get a little jealous not experiencing the university party life that I keep seeing on Instagram and Snapchat. As a young adult I needed to mature faster because I’ve been working with colleagues older than I am. But at the same time I know that working and learning right now will have long term benefits for me in the future.

Not only do I work for a prestigious company but I’ve also learned from some of the best talent in the industry which is extremely invaluable later on.

Apprenticeships overall don’t just provide “free training” it gives you a chance to start your life as an adult early on, gives you outstanding skills with the best teachers ever (mistakes and experience) and gives you work experience that almost all university graduates I know are devoid from.

In case anyone here is struggling to get an amazing apprenticeship that pays good and lets you be part of a prestigious company, my advice is to find an apprenticeship that you have a passion for, build skills that it requires and learn as much as you can because when you get interviewed they’ll hear your enthusiasm and attitude from your voice which will make you extremely competitive compared to those who just applied to get out of university or the salary.
