The number of high level apprenticeships started to increase from 2020 onwards – starters at level 6 & 7 increased 28% from 2019 to 2020. But is this growth set to continue in 2023?
What is an Apprenticeship?
Firstly, apprenticeships are paid, full-time jobs where you learn/gain valuable experience. Additionally, you get the opportunity to gain real-life experience working in that industry.
Previously, Apprenticeships were seen as a step below university – however now are regarded much higher, with more people opting for this choice.
- This is no surprise with universities costing up to £9,250 per year.
So why choose an apprenticeship?
Here are the Top 5 reasons why;
1. Gain Skills and Experience
An apprenticeship allows you to gain the knowledge and skill that you wouldn’t usually get at University. This then improves your CV and employability, as most employers favor candidates with qualifications, but also experience.
2. Learn from the experts
One of the biggest perks of doing an apprenticeship is that you have the opportunity to learn from people who have been working in that particular industry, who can pass down valuable knowledge and guidance. This is very helpful when starting a new role in an industry you may not have a lot of knowledge about.
This allows you to learn the practical skills that you wouldn’t have access to in a classroom or lecture.
3. Learn while you earn
Something that apprenticeships are most know for is the opportunity to earn a salary whilst receiving on the job training, as well as gain a nationally recognized qualification
Salaries range depending on the type of apprenticeship and the level of Apprenticeship that you do – along with your age. However as time goes on, you can expect salary and benefits to increase the more time you spend at your apprenticeship.
4. Ahead of the game!
In the job market, university graduates often suffer from lack of practical work experience. By doing an apprenticeship you will already be ahead with between one and two years of experience in the workplace. this give you and edge on someone with a university degree.
Apprenticeships also give you the chance to network! This is vital in any industry your are in, and getting a head start on this, and learning the ways of networking can be beneficial.
5. No debt
By the time a student finishes University, they will have a debt of up to £40k, which they will have to pay off over a number of years. With an apprenticeship, the case is the opposite, you get paid to learn AND get a qualification.
