When you think of the term ‘apprenticeships’, what first comes to mind? If you’re not sure what an apprenticeship really is, you’re not alone. There are sometimes misunderstandings about what’s available, the kind of training involved, and what it all means at the end of the day. Luckily, the Apprenticeship Network is here to separate fact from fiction. But why do an apprenticeship?
Here are three things to keep in mind when it comes to apprenticeships.
Firstly, what is an apprenticeship?
In essence, an apprenticeship is a chance to learn and earn at the same time. You’ll gain valuable hands-on experience and meaningful life-skills in a role or industry of your choosing, working alongside and learning from your colleagues. This vocational training works hand in hand with ‘off-the-job training’, where you build up your knowledge in classroom-based learning with the support of your training provider. At the end of it all, you’ll have achieved a nationally recognised qualification – alongside all the important experience, knowledge and skills you’ll have learnt along the way.
A great way to find out if an apprenticeship is the right fit for you is to hear from other apprentices directly. Search online or browse through the blog posts here on the Apprenticeship Network to find helpful resources, first-hand accounts, and trustworthy guidance on what you can expect from an apprenticeship – from the application process to the interview stage and even your first day on the job. There’s no better way to deeply understand a topic than to hear from those with direct experience. It’s important to remember you’re not alone and that support is available.
Furthering your education
Apprenticeships are the perfect combination of experience and qualifications, ensuring you’re well-equipped to step into the workforce and continue your professional journey – wherever that journey takes you. A lot of the time, apprenticeships are considered alternatives to university or college, with a particular benefit of apprenticeships being the opportunity to earn as you learn. But there are different situations for everyone. An apprenticeship could be suitable for those in an early stage of their careers. It might also be ideal for those looking to up-skill in their current role, or for those keen to develop new skills as they look to change careers.
There are also different levels of apprenticeships available: from Level 2 (or intermediate, with the closest educational equivalent being GCSEs) right up to Level 6 or 7 (degree level, with the closest educational equivalent being bachelor’s or master’s degrees). It’s a wide-ranging and exciting option for many wanting to take the next step in their professional careers.
Follow your passion
Did you know apprenticeships are available in all sorts of subjects and industries? Because of this, there are so many options to develop your skills whilst pursuing your own interests. It’s important to remember that there are different types of apprenticeships. Your choices aren’t restricted only to practical, hands-on professions, though these are of course available too.
Stretch your creativity or design skills. Explore catering or hospitality roles. Enter the digital, engineering or finance worlds. Learn on the job as you practise marketing or legal careers. Wherever your passion lies, there are opportunities available. You’ll achieve better results and go even further following something you love. And if you don’t know what you want to do? Well, this is only the beginning. There are lots of resources available to help you explore your options.
Most of all, it’s important to find a next step that suits you. Do your research, ask questions, browse opportunities until you find the perfect match. And when you do, you’ll set yourself on the path to success.
