My name is Layla. Today, I’m sharing my reasons for becoming an apprentice with The Apprenticeship Network.
Since I was about 12-years-old, I had a clear idea of what I wanted my future to look like: studying hard to get good A-Levels, getting into a good university, and then spending the span of my future working life trying to change the world.
My plan seemed simple enough, and I had the skills to make my dream a reality. But life has a strange way of not going exactly to plan…
“I really wanted to contribute something to the world.”
At 23, I hadn’t managed to study at university like I’d planned. I’d tried to find work, but struggled due to my disability. I’d started volunteering for a charity, which kept me busy and helped to fulfill my drive to help others. But what I really wanted was to contribute something to the world whilst building my career.
After a year of studying a degree from home, a new opportunity arose to join a Multiverse apprenticeship at the charity I was volunteering for. At this point, I had a lot of questions: University or an apprenticeship – which should I choose? What are the benefits of an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship wasn’t an option I’d considered before. I used to believe the myth that apprenticeships were only for a select few industries – none of which I was interested in becoming a part of.
“I took a leap, and it paid off!”
Now, I’m pleased to say that I was wrong. After carefully considering my options, I took a leap into the apprenticeship, and it paid off!
Not only am I now in paid employment, but I’m building my skills and finding ways to benefit a company that I care so much about. I’m a Digital Marketer working within a Social Media team. I’m using tools that are revolutionising the way my team works; all because of the skills I’ve learned as an apprentice!
In less than a year with my company, I’ve taken part in projects that really made me feel valuable. I have a much better appreciation for my own talent than I once did.
My apprenticeship has given me access to a whole new side of myself; my future is brighter now at 26-years-old than it’s been in quite some time.
So, here’s a message for anyone reading this: If you’re looking to start (or resume) your career, why not become an apprentice?
You never know, it just might change your life!
