Why employers should recruit apprentices

Why employers should recruit apprentices

Today’s job market presents numerous challenges to the employer. In this entry, we will look into how apprentices can solve many of them.

What is an apprentice?

Similar to a trainee, an apprentice is an employee and a student. For an agreed term, they are taken on board to acquire specialized skills specific to the industry and company. Apprentices can be 16 and straight out of school, or a veteran in a different industry, looking for a career change. At the end of the apprenticeship, the apprentice will have loads of valuable skills and a government recognised qualification.

Why are apprentices important?

Besides the fact that formal higher education may not be for everyone (which is a whole different topic, for more read here: [INSERT IN/OUTBOUND LINK]), apprentices are a great opportunity for companies looking to expand and grow in meaningful, impactful ways.

Common employer problems and why apprentices are the solution

Getting people to stay

As years go by, the rate of job and career change continue to increase, which begs the question: how do employers get people to stay? Apprentices are a fantastic solution to this problem. Getting integrated into the company culture is important and comes with time. They build a culture of loyalty, as they are more likely to stay where they were trained. If you show your employees that you are invested in their professional development, they are more inclined to stay.

Apprentices can revitalise a company

Having a diverse workforce is essential to the growth of a company. Many companies struggle with “level gaps”, having lots of employees in senior roles but non in the trainee or executive positions. This is a great opportunity to productively and effectively grow talent and develop a motivated, skilled and well rounded workforce.

Saving time and costs on recruitment

Bonus points as instead of recruiting new employees for more senior roles, promoting existing employees saves time and costs. It also works to build loyalty. Employees are interested in progression and greatly appreciate the offers.

After school, thousands of students are unsure of their next step. At the apprentice network we seek to inform students on their options and knowledge so they are equipped and confident to make this big decision.
