Course Overview

The wood product manufacturing sub sector is part of the manufacturing sector. Wood operatives create high volumes of product by manufacturing wooden products from timber such as:

  • Furniture
  • Stairs
  • Veneers
  • Wood flooring
  • Doors
  • Windows, the list goes on!

Duties include operating a range of machinery and preparing machinery for the manufacturing process. Spot checking material to spot any defects or faults before going ahead with the process. Dependant on the finished product, prepare wood for assembly by sanding down the wood and positioning in place for fixings and adhesives to be added.

The finished products are then sold onto construction industries, building merchants. 

In a day-to-days work you’d be communicating internally as well externally with customers, deliveries, stores, suppliers dependant on the size of organisation you’re working for, if so you would report back to your supervisor/manager.

Skills

  • Follow health and safety requirements and identifying risks and hazards in the workplace by using initiative to apply appropriate measures to control
  • Excellent communication skills online and offline with internal and external partners
  • Follow diagrams and instructions and interpret these effectively and sufficiently
  • Select and set up correct machinery, tools, components for each wood product 
  • Add the correct finishings to the product including, paints, sealers, fixings etc.
  • Ensure the product meets the standards given by checking and inspecting it meets the criteria
  • Handover to other manufacturing teams and complete work documentation such as job sheets and time cards.

Entry Requirements

You need to be aged 16 and over to be able to apply for this apprenticeship. Both English and Maths are required to complete this apprenticeship. Apprentices who don’t have a level 1 in both Maths and English will need to have this level and those without a level 2 will need to have achieve this in advance before their end point assessment . Those with an education, health and care plan or a legacy statement the minimum requirement is a level 3 in both Maths and English.

Next Steps

After completing the Level 2 apprenticeship there are a number of options available to develop your career, depending on your final grade you could move onto a level 3 apprenticeship, into higher education or even permanent employment.
